Theme Customization

After installing Savory you can personalize the theme by setting link, accent, text highlight, and background colors. Swap out the background image a different texture, image or just a solid color. In the appearances menu you also have the ability to change the body font, and upload a logo.

Social Features

Savory has built in support for group blogs, sharing on Facebook and Twitter, Disqus, and Flickr. You can always use the Description HTML to extend the sidebar for ads, additional content boxes, social plugins and much more.

Typekit Support

Want ultimate control over the typography in Savory? New to Savory 1.1 is full integration of Typekit in the appearance options. Here are the basic steps involved in setting up Typekit for your site:

Register for a Typekit account - https://typekit.com/plans Typekit offers several affordable yearly accounts, but you can always go with the free plan with access to their trial library.
Browse through the library and click + Add to Kit after you’ve selected the body and title font for your site.
While you have the Typekit Editor open go through the list of Weights & Styles (screenshot) selecting only the fonts that you need. This is typically regular, regular italic, bold and bold italic.
Once you have your two fonts selected hit the green Publish button at the bottom right (screenshot).
Go to back to Tumblr and open Customize > Appearance, find the Typekit ID field and paste in your Typekit ID. You can find the ID by opening the Typekit Editor and clicking Embed Code at the top right. You only want to copy and paste the 7-8 character ID at the bottom (screenshot).
Now paste in the font-family values for the body and title fonts into Customize > Appearance. You will find it by clicking Advanced below the Selectors on the left (screenshot).
Example: “proxima-nova-1”,”proxima-nova-2”,sans-serif

Tip: Even if you don’t use Typekit you can use the Typekit Body Font and Typekit Title Font options to paste in other standard font-family fonts.

Customization Options

Accent Color

Set the color of key text elements including Text titles, author and source credits, tags, icons, and others.

Link Color

This change the color of links in the posts and sidebar elements.

Link Hover Color

Change the rollover color for the links.

Background Color

This is useful if you want to clear the background image to simply have a solid color or if you have a background image that fades to a solid color.

Selection Color

Set the highlight color when you’re selecting blocks of text.

Body Font

This option give you the ability to select from 16 fonts to apply to the majority of the text. Only the small button/UI text is excluded from this list.

Logo Image

Upload an image to use as a logo or header image in the sidebar. Ideally the image should be 300px wide.

Background Image

Upload a new background texture or image. By default the image will tile in the background, but with the Custom CSS field you can define the repeat, fixed, and position of the image.

Show Portrait in Description

Displays your 30px portrait icon in your site description.

Show Group Blog Details

By default Savory will list all the site authors in the sidebar as well as add a “posted by” below each post. Uncheck this option if you want to hide the authors.

Show follow on Tumblr link

This adds a “Follow on Tumblr” link to the top left of the page.

Show Logo Frame

Add a white page frame with a drop shadow behind your logo image.

Disable Textures

This option will hide the stitching, textures, and page tears if you want to go with a clean design.

Site Titles

Set the titles to display above your description, contributors (group blog authors), recent tweets, and liked posts.

Disqus Username

Add your Disqus site shortname to enable comments on Savory.

Crispy Turnovers with Apple, Bacon, and Caramelized Onions

One of my favorite sites covering food, kitchens and cooking would have to be The Kitchn (one of Apartment Therapy’s sites). This morning when I noticed their post for turnovers filled with buttery, salty, sweet goodness I knew I couldn’t pass up trying out the recipe.

What You Need

Ingredients:

2 sheets frozen puff pastry
6 strips bacon, diced
2 medium-sized yellow onions, sliced thinly
1 apple (of the baking variety), diced small
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
2-3 tablespoons cider vinegar
1 egg yolk mixed with one tablespoon warm water
Optional: 4-6 ounces gouda or sharp cheddar cheese

Instructions

Make sure the pastry shells are room temperature
Slowly cook the bacon to render out all the fat

The Mast Brothers Chocolate factory occupies only three rooms in a nondescript building in Williamsburg. The first doubles as a storefront that opens on the weekend to customers with much of the equipment fully exposed to the public. It’s a different story during the weekdays, it is there that the process of making their bean to bar chocolate begins and end. From sorting out the cacao beans to wrapping each bar by hand, the operation starts from one room to another and back again until the final product.

If you’re ever in San Francisco, CA take a trip to visit A16 in the Marina neighborhood. The restaurant is named after the highway that covers southern Italy from Naples to Canosa. While researching food and wine for the restaurant Shelley Lindgren (wine director/owner) spent weeks driving up and down A16 soaking up inspiration for the resturant. Along with Shelley Liza Shaw (executive chef) and Lori Rich (pastry chef) celebrate the concept of slow food and local farmers and purveyors.

During a recent trip I was lucky enough to try the Squid ink tonnarelli with octopus, black olives, tomato, chiles and garlic. It was fantastic!

Vanilla Rice Pudding & Chocolate Panna Cotta

Earlier this evening I stumbled upon this recipe on Tartelette’s blog. This glutin-free adaptation of rice pudding and panna cotta looks fantastic. I’ll have to give it a try this weekend.

What you need

For the rice pudding:

1 cup rice (really the kind you like best)
1 1/2 cups (315ml) whole milk (I used raw)
1/2 vanilla bean, split open
1/2 cup (60ml) heavy cream
1/4 cup (50gr) sugar
Pinch of salt

For the chocolate panna cotta:

1 tablespoon powdered gelatin (2 sheets gelatin)
1/4 cup water
1 cup whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup honey
8 oz bittersweet chocolate
1 cup Greek yogurt
